The Summer term at George Mason is not a standard term like Fall and Spring. The summer consists of varying sessions that can overlap and have different start and end dates. The VA calculates the rate of pursuit for each session separately. If your courses overlap, the VA will use the highest rate of pursuit while the sessions overlap to calculate stipend payments.

Any classes that don't have a course start date and end date that align with the beginning and end of the standard Fall and Spring terms are considered nonstandard terms. This includes all summer terms and many online graduate programs. Please see below for information regarding the summer sessions.

Example:
You are a Chapter 35 undergraduate student taking 3 credit hours during A session, which is a 6-week nonstandard term. This session starts on 05/18/2026 and ends on 06/26/26. If you are taking 3 credits within a 6-week session, your benefits during this period are charged at ¾ training time and you receive the ¾ rate for the Chapter 35 stipend. Please see the military website for current monthly rates.
Chapter 30, 35, 1606 Graduate Summer 2026 Estimates
Calculate the number of weeks in a term by taking the number of days in a term and dividing by 7. Round to the nearest week (for example, 8 weeks and 3 days is rounded to 8 weeks, while 4 weeks and 4 days is rounded to 5 weeks).

VA Formula for non-standard term
Credit hours x 18 / number of weeks in the term.
Multiply the number of credits you are taking in the term by 18. Divide this number by the number of weeks of the term. Take that number and match under the credit hours in the Training Time Table to the right.
Example:
You are a Chapter 35 graduate student in one 9-week course for 3 credits from 05/26 to 07/25.
(3 credits x 18) ÷ 9 weeks = 6. Based on the table above, 3 credits in nine weeks is the equivalent of 6 credits in a normal semester.
Your benefits during this period are charged at ¾ training time, and you receive the ¾ rate Chapter 35 stipend.
If your classes are in overlapping terms, the VA will use whichever training time is highest during the overlap period. While this benefits you from a stipend perspective, you should be aware that your benefit is also being reduced at the higher rate.
VMSDEP - Virginia Military Survivors & Dependents Program
