Undeclared Majors/Non-Degree

Undeclared Majors

Students are prohibited from using VA benefits beyond their sophomore year in an undeclared major. Undeclared majors include pre-nursing, pre-business, undeclared engineering, and undecided engineering. Please review your major and class standing and reach out to Academic Advising if this requirement affects you.

Non-Degree Students

VA defines matriculated as having been formally admitted to a college or university as a degree-seeking student. VA educational benefits cannot be paid to non-matriculated college or university students unless they are pending admission to your school. In that case they can be certified for two quarters or semesters. This is typically only an option for graduate students. The only courses that can be certified are those required for admission and those required if admitted. Additional information can be found in Title 38 CFR 21.4252.

If you are non-degree at George Mason to take courses that will fulfill a degree requirement at a parent school. please follow the Parent Letter Process. The “Parent” school is the institution issuing the student's degree. The “Guest” school is the institution where the student is taking credits with the expectation that those credits will be transferred. A Parent Letter is required from the student’s degree-granting institution and is sent to the Guest school in order for a student’s credits to be submitted to the VA. This letter allows the guest school to certify credits for a student, knowing that those credits will count towards a degree at the parent school.
