The Veterans and the Arts Initiative at the Hylton Performing Arts Center provides veterans, servicemembers, their families, and military caregivers the opportunity to attend performances, workshops, lessons, exhibitions, and special events featuring music, visual art, dance, and poetry. Many of these events are free.
Everyone needs a little help now and then, and it takes strength to ask for it. Mason provides a variety of services to help you make your college experience the best it can be.
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)
CAPS is focused on providing access to mental health care and learning services. The office helps students reach out to experts in college mental health who assess concerns and connect students with needed services on and off campus. CAPS offers a variety of free services provided by a staff of professional clinical psychologists, social workers, counselors, learning specialists, and psychiatric providers. Individual and group counseling is available. For more information, call 703-993-2380.
Center for Community Mental Health hosted by College of Humanities and Social Services
CCMH is proud to work with veterans and their families. Therapy, assessment and medication management programs are available to anyone in need on a sliding scale to ensure that cost is not a barrier to receiving mental health care. For qualified veterans, the Jennifer DiMauro Honor Fund for Veterans supports assessments, therapy, and medication management at no cost to veterans. If you are a veteran who would like to seek mental health care at CCMH, please request services HERE.
Office of Disability Services (ODS)
ODS implements and coordinates reasonable accommodations and disability-related services that afford equal access to Mason's programs and activities. It is available to serve all students with disabilities, including those with cognitive, learning, psychological, sensory, mobility, and other physical impairments, and sustained head injuries. For more information, call 703-993-2474.
Office of Compliance, Diversity, and Ethics (CDE)
CDE provides leadership and support on matters relating to equity, diversity, access, respect, and inclusiveness for all members of the Mason community. If you or someone you know is the subject of illegal harassment or discrimination, you can meet with a member of the CDE team to talk about your options. We investigate claims of harassment, discrimination, and sexual misconduct and determine if further action is necessary. For more information, call 703-993-8730.
Mason Veterans and Servicemembers Legal Clinic (M-Vets)
M-Vets, a group of students at the Antonin Scalia Law School, assists active-duty members of the armed forces, their families, and veterans with free representation. The clinic, established in 2004, has provided help in such areas as landlord-tenant matters, consumer protection and contract issues, uncontested divorces, step-parent and close-relative adoptions, MEB/PEBs, discharge upgrades, military pay and entitlement matters in federal and state forums. For more information, call 703-993-8214.
Veterans who return from conflict zones with mental and emotional traumas can sometimes have legal problems involving drugs and alcohol. If so, they might be sent to the Fairfax County Veterans Treatment Docket. This court-supervised program, specifically for military veterans, offers legal help from Mason Law students such as Jameson Goodell and Fernando Cota-Wertz of the Fairfax County Veterans Drug Treatment Legal Clinic. The federally funded, multi-department program is supported by the Veterans and Servicemembers Legal Clinic of Mason's Antonin Scalia Law School.
